Karachi
As Shobhaa De began her talk, in one breath she likened Karachi to Mumbai, said she felt like at home here and that Karachiites are hospitable. The reason for her rush after she took the mike was probably a feeling of relief after all that sitting before a full-house and giving out smiles?or perhaps she suspected the audience was bored by Asif Noorani?s earlier speech and needed to be shown some charm.
She shared how in a telephone conversation with her children she referred to the crowd she met at a mehndi last night as ?cuties? and ?hotties?. She then urged women to be courageous before relating what hurdles she had to face on her way to fame and influence. Her first novel, Socialite Evenings, received 253 ?terrible? reviews, the highest number for any book in India, yet she did not care. Her father, she said, was accused of not being ?man enough to control her?, but still she stood her ground and made him proud. The audience clapped as they seemed to be loving her principles of feminism at an event held, ironically, in a ?Ball?room.
But then she said something which sounded like she was calling Urdu a regional language, a reference that was to earn her the fury of Mohsin Saeed, the fashion journalist. Saeed had asked her why all hell had broken loose particularly after her book when Urdu writers such as Quratulain Haider and Ismat Chughtai had written about the same subject decades earlier. To which Ms De replied that those works possibly did not appeal to a wider audience because, unlike her book, they were published in regional languages. Before De could offer more explanations, a woman asked her if she really hated Deepika Padukone. Hell no, she said. And the session ended.
On the way to the main garden from the Ballroom, a furious Saeed ran into some women. ?How dare she?? he spluttered. ?How dare she call Urdu a regional language, and who has told her she is the pioneer of the women?s cause??
Shobhaa De possibly had her first ?terrible? review of the day.
