Microsoft relaunches Hotmail as social-friendly Outlook

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp unveiled a revamped, Facebook-friendly version of its free, online email service on Tuesday in an attempt to reverse market share losses to Google Inc's fast-growing Gmail.

The world's largest software company is renaming its Hotmail service Outlook, giving it a sharp new look, social network links, and new features for handling the tide of junk and mass mail that swamps many users.

Hotmail was still the world's largest online mail service as of June, according to the latest comScore figures available, with 324 million users, or about 36 percent of the global market.

In a bid to recapture growth, Microsoft is renaming the service Outlook, a name familiar to most corporate workers who use Microsoft's Office email application, and sprucing up the whole experience. Hotmail users will be prompted to switch over to the new service over the next few months.

Hotmail, launched in 1996, was one of the first online email services, but it has not been updated by Microsoft for eight years.

"A lot has changed in the last eight years, and we think it's time for a fresh look at email," Chris Jones, Microsoft's corporate vice president of Windows Live, said in a blog post.

The new look is clean and uncluttered, featuring lots of white space, reminiscent of Google's recent makeover of Gmail. Relatively unobtrusive advertisements appear in a column to the right of the screen when looking at folders. They do not appear when a message is open.

Users can link up with their Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+ accounts, to see the latest updates from friends and contacts. Online chat is available via Facebook.

Newsletters, offers, daily deals and social updates make up over 80 percent of a typical inbox, according to Microsoft's own research. To help combat that overflow, the new service automatically detects mass messages and puts them in separate folders. Users can customize the process to sort mail any way they want to.

The new mail service also allows easy use of Microsoft's Internet-based products, such as SkyDrive for storing documents, Office Web Apps for working away from a PC, and will eventually have Skype video chat built in.

Users can access the service at www.outlook.com. Microsoft said the service is currently a "preview," meaning more features will likely be added before the final version is fully launched.

NYC movie, pin-up collection slated for auction

NEW YORK (AP) ? Movie Star News amassed a staggering amount of film stills, posters and negatives over the past 73 years ? nearly 3 million, including 1,500 prints of Bettie Page, known as the queen of pin-ups. But last week, the once-lively store in lower Manhattan was lifeless. The classic movie posters that once covered its narrow 2,000-square-foot space were rolled up or covered in cellophane, its bins and racks empty. Everything was packed up in cardboard boxes that lined the floor.

The legendary Manhattan store credited with creating pin-up art had sold its entire inventory to a Las Vegas collectibles company.

The collection, regarded as one of the largest of its kind, is headed for the auction block. It will be sold in a series of sales slated to begin next year. The bulk of the collection covers the years 1939 to 1979; 11,500 movies and 5,000 actors are represented.

"This is the most important photo archive of Hollywood in existence. There are tens of thousands of negatives that have never been reproduced," said Stuart Scheinman, co-owner of Entertainment Collectibles, which bought the collection. "There are images here that have never been seen by the public."

There are 2,000 original prints and negatives of Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando, 1,000 of Gary Cooper, 400 of Bette Davis, hundreds of movie images of "The Godfather" and "Gone With the Wind."

"This could literally take five to 10 years to go through it all," Scheinman said. He would only say the company purchased the collection for "seven figures." Its true value was anyone's guess, but he believed it easily was worth $150 million.

Movie Star News produced 8-by-10 glossy prints from the negatives, selling each for a few dollars in the store and through the mail. But the Internet has significantly cut down on demand.

"I make references to things when customers come in, and they have no idea what I'm talking about," said Ira Kramer, who took over the business that his mother, Paula, and uncle Irving Klaw, started in 1939. "Today, if you want a picture of a star you can go on the computer and download it. So what do you need me for?"

"The maintenance of the collection has been fastidious ... the way a fine library would maintain material," said Arlan Ettinger, president of Guernsey's and in charge of selling the collection.

As far back as the 1940s, Movie Star News had a mailing list of 100,000 names. World War II soldiers were big customers, buying prints for their lockers, Kramer said.

The entrepreneurial Klaw, who died in 1966, hit on the idea of selling pictures of Hollywood stars while operating a movie bookstore.

"He noticed that kids were tearing out the pictures of the movie stars, so he decided to sell their pictures rather than the books," Kramer said. Klaw started dealing directly with movie studios, RKO, Columbia and others, located in those days along Eleventh Avenue.

"He made arrangements to buy from them whatever they didn't want ... original negatives, original prints of 'Citizen Kane,' 'Three Stooges,'" he said. The studios were more than happy to be rid of the stuff for which they had no room.

Kramer's mother was the one who took the pin-up shots. But it was Klaw who launched that side of the business after a man approached him about making him a set of photographs of skimpily-clad girls posing with whips and ropes, said Kramer.

Page was Klaw's favorite model, and a suitcase of the 7-inch heels she wore in the photos, plus other bondage props, will be included in the auction.

The photos were tame by today's standards. In fact, the models were required to wear two pairs of underwear. But the FBI continuously harassed Klaw and he had to appear before the 1955 Senate Subcommittee on Obscene and Pornographic Materials.

"It was a big headache," Kramer said. Klaw finally decided to burn all the pin-up material ? but Paula Klaw saved a lot of it.

The Steelers aren?t as old as they used to be, with aging veterans James Farrior, Aaron Smith, Chris Hoke and Hines Ward retiring this offseason. Hampton said the Steelers have the right players in place to replace those longtime teammates.

?No question about it, when you?ve been around those guys 10-plus years, it?s definitely different,? Hampton said. ?But that?s part of it. You see guys come and go all the time. Those are definitely special guys, but I think those guys will fill in and do their best to make up for it.?

Hampton is currently on the Physically Unable to Perform list, but he says he?ll be ready to go when he needs to go.

?I don?t have no problem with being on it as long as I need to be,? Hampton said. ?I just want to get it right and be right when I?m out there. I don?t want to be out there hobbling messing around; I wanna be out there ready to go.?

And Hampton thinks the Steelers are ready to go to the postseason again, regardless of anyone saying he?s old and slow.

Some would assume that the cheated on spouse would seek counseling and while this may be true, more and more cheaters are making their way towards the road to redemption.? Perhaps it is their own inability to face the destruction that they have caused that inspires a shift in focus.? While it is imperative to help the individual, it is also important to treat the family unit, particularly the children.

Even when children are not privy to the intimate details of an affair (which they shouldn?t be), they are profoundly aware of the emotional damage that follows the affair.? Having an affair is like building a house of cards; it looks pretty, but it is not sturdy and it usually falls.? When it falls, it leaves a mess.

In an effort to somehow ?fix the mess,? parents must be willing to help their children recover from the negative impact of the affair.? What surprises some; is that BOTH parents have work to do.? While the cheated on spouse is the victim in the situation, he or she must be willing to work with the spouse who cheated, in a collaborative effort to provide loving balance to their child(ren) once again.

First, parents must learn to recreate an environment of security within the parent-child relationship.? This is different from the security that the cheated on spouse must feel from the spouse who strayed. ?When children lose their ability to feel safe and protected, either they develop unhealthy attachment issues or they shut down.? Either response is detrimental to the parent-child relationship because while children are resilient for the most part, they are also fragile in some ways.

What they experience within the family of origin sets the stage for other relationships that will follow.? It is paramount for parents who have experienced an affair to collectively work together to validate the children?s concerns by attending to heart matters.? The goal here is to provide a sense of safety, not add to the chaos by giving too much information or having the kids play favorites.? As much as it may hurt, the parents must work together to help children understand that they are not at fault, and that the family can heal in time.

Secondly, parents must re-establish family values.? There has to be a recommitment for family health that is deliberate on the parts of the parents.? Some parents choose to have family nights or date nights in which the desires of the family are taken into consideration.?? Just as money and time was invested into the affair, a greater investment must be given to the children to make them aware that they are a priority.? The parents must lead by example here.? It is not up to the children to define what the family values are.? While the children can certainly voice their opinions (in a respectful tone), responsible adults must establish the principles that guide the family.

Some marriages do not recover from affairs.? There are scores of couples who realize that the reasons that led to the affair, or the affair itself is too much for the marriage to tolerate.? Divorce happens.? It is a harsh reality.? This by no means serves as an excuse to neglect the emotional well-being of the child(ren) involved.? Regardless if a marriage ends or not, the adult relationship should still be strengthened when children are involved.? ?Parenting is a partnership.? Even when parents divorce, they are not divorcing the children. ??They both still have a commitment to their children that should be fulfilled regardless of the marital status.

The third and probably most important thing that parents can do after an affair is work together for the benefit of the child(ren).?? Whether or not parents stay married they still have a relationship; a parenting relationship.? In these cases when divorce is imminent, the cheated on spouse may have difficulty getting beyond their own hurt and sometimes the spouse who cheated does not make this any easier.? If there was ever a time to becomes less self-absorbed it is when children are hurting.? That is not the time to focus on one?s ego.? This is possibly the hardest lesson that any couple healing from an affair has to face.? Their pain plays second to the pain of their children.

The fourth way that parents can help children through infidelity is to model forgiveness.? Of course this is no walk in the park, but it is important for healing.? It is now a common belief that forgiveness is more about self than it is for the other person.? The sting of betrayal can be long lasting, but when the cheated on spouse does not forgive, he or she continues to carry the burden of ?what could I have done to change things??

There is a tendency to engage in self-blaming and other self-destructive tactics, which ultimately are ineffective.?? When children see parents finding peace through the process of forgiveness, they are better suited to find that same peace, rather than take unresolved emotions with them to school and other social settings where behavioral problems often manifest.

The fifth way that parents can help their child(ren) is through practicing recovery.? Those in private practice are not encouraged to pretend that all is well and make believe that the affair or subsequent pain does not exist.? Quite the opposite is suggested.? Hurt parents should acknowledge and process their own pain (aside from their relationship with their children), but model this same need to process and heal to their children.? When children see their parents working at becoming better parents after a mistake, they are more likely to work on being better people themselves.? Recovering from an affair is hard work, but the results are worth it!

The latest development in our neverending saga of worldwide patent warfare is a decision by a Mannheim judge banning Motorola's Android devices on the basis that they violate a FAT storage patent owned by Microsoft. FOSSPatents' Florian Mueller tweets that it is the third victory by Microsoft over Motorola, and Microsoft has already issued a triumphant statement of victory which you can read after the break. There's more details about patent EP0618540 on the site -- it deals with common name space for long and short file names -- including a note about an email from Linux creator Linus Torvalds being cited as prior art. Motorola has been swinging its own patents around as well, but most recently a case to ban the Xbox 360 was delayed. We haven't heard from Motorola or Google on this ruling yet or what their response will be -- entering into a licensing agreement or changing the storage system used on their phones are possible options. Microsoft will have to put up a 10 million euro bond to enforce an injunction if it chooses, we'll check back once the other shoe drops.

Update: We've just received Motorola's response -- brief but to the point:"We are in process of reviewing the ruling, and will explore our options including appeal. We don't anticipate an impact on our operations at this time."

The politics of guns leapt to the top of the presidential race Wednesday, as President Barack Obama embraced some degree of control of weapons sales and Republican Mitt Romney seemed to suggest an alleged mass killer in Colorado had obtained his weapons illegally even though he hadn't.

Speaking to a mostly black audience in New Orleans, Obama said he would seek a consensus on combating violence. He said some responsibility also rests with parents, neighbors and teachers to ensure that young people "do not have that void inside them."

Obama's remarks came five days after the movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colo., that left 12 dead and dozens wounded. He pledged to work with lawmakers of both parties to stop violence ? not only the sudden massacres that have bedeviled the nation, but also the steady drip of urban crime that has cost many young lives.

The president called for stepped-up background checks for people who want to buy guns and restrictions to keep mentally unbalanced individuals from buying weapons. He said those steps "shouldn't be controversial, they should be common sense."

Romney, meanwhile, said many of the weapons deployed by the shooting suspect in Colorado were possessed illegally and that changing laws wouldn't prevent gun-related tragedies. His comments added a confusing layer to the debate because authorities say the firearms that James Holmes allegedly used to kill 12 people were obtained legally.

"This person shouldn't have had any kind of weapons and bombs and other devices, and it was illegal for him to have many of those things already," Romney told NBC News in an interview in London. "But he had them. And so we can sometimes hope that just changing the law will make all bad things go away. It won't."

Authorities say Holmes broke no laws when he bought an assault-style rifle, a shotgun and Glock handgun, and he passed the required background checks.

Aides to Romney said the former Massachusetts governor was alluding only to homemade bombs, reportedly used as attempted booby-traps in Holmes' apartment, when he spoke of items "illegal for him to have."

"The illegality the governor is referencing is the ordinances, the devices that were in the home," said campaign spokesman Danny Diaz. "He was not referencing the weapons carried to the theater."

In a separate interview with KRNV-TV in Nevada, Romney seemed more precise. He said Holmes "had various incendiary devices, bombs of some kind. The idea that saying those things, of course, were illegal, but he had them, simply passing laws does not make the threat of an individual who is deranged, disappear."

Romney's campaign acknowledged Wednesday that Holmes' gun purchases apparently were legal.

Aurora authorities disassembled the booby traps in the apartment, and they did not explode. It's unclear if the suspect obtained the bomb materials illegally, but it's against Colorado law to build an explosive device.

like one should spend dollars and not save them but why silver and gold in particular over other material assets? Well when SHTF does happen and America becomes a third world country for several decades (I don't understand why people just assume we are going to recover in the matter of days, I think it'll be several years) your going to have spend all your gold and silver because all your currency will be worthless. Once your gold and silver dries up and you lost your job that you will probably never reclaim for some time, what are you going to do? I think perhaps investing in land might be the best idea and start farming. One thing that people will always need, when nobody has jobs, when their currencies are worthless and it costs a thousand dollars to buy a loaf of bread is food. I think one should invest in production assets that allow you to produce things that people will need no matter in what condition the economy is in. If I buy 1000 oz of silver, when shtf i'll still have 1000 oz of silver and no production method to produce more and will eventually have to spend it because i'll have no job to buy food and will most likely not have the ability to buy more silver and gold because i'll have no job and will be to worried about buying other things like food, oil, toilet paper, things that I actually need and will most likely not have money just sitting around to invest in. yay food I think investing in production assets is the best way to go so that way I can get a real return on my investment. If I bought a cow and it had a baby I would get a real return (another cow) whose value could go up and down based off of how much our currency is actually worth, but at the end of the day I have another cow no matter what, and a way to produce more if I needed to spend it. I think simply stockpile up on food is a bad idea as food eventually goes bad, and one should invest in ways to produce food. id="msg">

why gold and silver and not TP? its just the way they did it from the begging of time... before TP was even invented. our ancestors went to gold and silver for not just its MONETARY purpose. it was used in building many things back then as well: temples, silverware, cups, vases, armor, jewelry.... at the time there was NOTHING ELSE.... gold and silver have just recently become COMMODITIES, in terms of what they are TODAY. back THEN, 200-2000+ years ago, it was THE standard of wealth and trade. before that you did use things such as fur skins, weapons, etc.. the indians... the way things are looking I wouldnt be surprised if the US GOV went to TP as a form of currency... id="msg">

If you go back and read many of the archived posts,many of us have said all along that survival hoarding should be first! You need a supply of food(many of the freeze-dried kinds have a 20-25 year shelf-life)no debt,water,firearms and ammo and whatever you need to survive,THEN look at precious metals as a way to preserve your wealth against the currency collapse. PM's are a strategy for having something coming out the other side of a collapse. Some folks are pouring all of their extra cash into PMs without taking care of the"survival" needs. Personally,I have no debt,an 18 month supply of food,4 guns with ammo(I probably need more ammo than I have)for protection and for food acquisition. I even have a hoard of toilet paper. I will keep a small amount of cash on hand for essentials AND 11 ozs. of gold and 160 ozs. of silver. So,I agree with your premise,gold and silver will probably not be all that useful in a currency collapse,but it will make your life a whole lot better when a new economy is established.id="msg">

The thing most people miss when talking about gold and silver when considering it against inflation/collapse/etc is; You cannot value it in dollars! Value it in any other commodity that has value regardless of the "dollar amount" slapped on to it. Man hours worked ounces of gold/silver Gallons of milk Population Dollar values only tie together relative worth of two goods/services, so things that are traded in dollars should be compared with their dollar value stripped. If a gallon of milk costs me $3.50 And an ounce of gold costs me $1,650 The value ratio is 471:1 If milk goes up to $6.50 and gold only increases just a bit to $1,700 the value ratio changes to 261:1 Even though gold went up in "price" it went down in value against Milk. How about against population? This is one of my favorites. Currently, there is roughly 7.02B people on the planet. Lets say there is 30,623 tonnes of gold above ground (taken from wikipedia) In ounces that's around 984,552,305 ozt, or a ratio of 7.13/ozt Au : 1 person Let say over the next 10 years we add 700M people, and 200M ounces troy of gold. Now we are at a ratio of 6.5/ozt Au : 1 Person. The value of gold just went up against the population. Doesn't matter what gold did in dollars. This is all my opinions/thought's, please don't take it as 100% fact, confirm things for yourself, make your own investments. For though, I'll be holding for quite some time. id="msg">
